Do you collect things?
I’m a tool junkie. I collect anything that looks like it might be useful in the studio. I often repurpose things meant for other uses like balloons or shoehorns. Kitchen gadgets are great for this, too.
What super power do you want to have?
The ability to manipulate time. It always seems to get away from me. Super strength would also be lovely, as ceramic materials are heavy!
Do you have a motto or creed that as an artist you live by?
Editing ruthlessly is often the key to making work with a strong impact, although so is committing to going all the way with an over-the-top idea. These two are not contradictory.
How do you come up with ideas?
Ideas usually come in the form of a strong visual image, but sometimes it’s an atmosphere or feeling I want to recreate. Then I research until I find connections and associations that can enrich the original idea and add layers of meaning and interest. Often two or more different ideas merge over time to become one work, even if at first they seem incompatible. Research and problem solving are a big part of how my ideas evolve.
How do you know or feel when a good idea, is a good idea?
I usually sleep on it. If it's still good the next morning, and the next, then I know for sure.
